3 Important Garage Door Maintenance Tips To Remember

Blog

The garage door that is used to get your car in and out of the garage is one of those things that needs regular maintenance. However, many homeowners overlook this fact and tend to let the garage door continue to have problems until they are significantly major. It is at this point that repairs are the most expensive and difficult, which could ultimately lead you to having to replace the garage door altogether. Here are three important maintenance tips to remember to ensure that you can avoid this issue:

  1. Reset the Garage Door Opener: If there is a problem with the garage door opening and closing as it normally should, then you want to be sure that you reset the garage door opener. You will have to refer to the owners manual or look up your specific garage door type online to see what the instructions are for doing this. Typically, you will have to unplug the garage door opener, wait for a few seconds, and then plug it back in. Once it is back on, you will want to hold down the close button until the garage door is shut completely.
  2. Realign Sensors: The garage door sensors will need to be realigned if it is not working properly. You should test the sensors every once in a while by placing something soft in the path of the sensors. When you go to close the garage door, it should stop because it notices that something is in the way. If it does not stop, this is when you know that the sensors need to be realigned. You simply need to push the sensor back into position and the sensor should tell you that you have pushed it enough to be back in the center by showing a solid red light. Sometimes, garage door sensors indicate that it is out of alignment by flashing a red light constantly.
  3. Clean Track Properly: Over time, dirt and dust can gather in the garage door track, which is why it needs to be cleaned regularly. However, you must be sure that you clean it properly. First off, you should not use any lubricant, which can cause things to stick to the track making it even more difficult for the garage door to open properly. The best way to clean the track is simply to wipe it clean with a damp cloth.

By keeping these three maintenance tips in mind, you can take care of your garage door in the best way possible. Contact a local garage door service for assistance or more information.
